vista ftp problem
« on: June 15, 2007, 03:02:23 AM »
Hello,
I have recently purchased a new computer with windows vista.
I am trying to connect to my site using ftp clients and I seem unable to connect.
The message I keep getting is;
"Error:   Transfer channel can't be opened. Reason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
Error:   Could not retrieve directory listing"

The FTP program in the command line has no trouble working.
I have tried turning the firewall off.
The settings are at PASV (Passive)

I cannot get filezilla or visual studio 2005 to connect using ftp.

Anybody have any idea on where to start fixing this problem?

Do you have any other programs running security on your computer?  Such as Norton Internet Security/Firewall/AV, etc.  Even with the firewall off, a program such as that can still be blocking a program.  You can also run a scan here at, Shields Up, to see what ports are open, blocked, stealthed, and more, to help you diagnose the problem further.  Since FTP in the command line works, what about using explorer?  Have you tried using windows explorer/IE to connect to FTP, if so, does that work?

The computer came with norton installed, I have removed it and applied the norton removal tool. What a pile of S*#t nortons is.

I have turned off all firewalls and the virus scanner (AVG).

ftp doesn't work from IE/explorer. Looks like I will have to do a reinstall.

FYI....there are MANY reports of FTP failures in IE 7.  I had a client going in circles with FTP issues and then finally narrowed it down to the fact they recently upgraded to IE 7.  Here is what I wrote to them and after making adjustments in IE 7 the FTP worked.

----
I have done a little more researching and it does appear that FTP directly within IE7 is a problem.  Lots of discussion out there about functionality that microsoft removed from IE 7 regarding FTP due to security issues.  Here are a few suggestions to try at home and see if it works for you.

Instead of using Internet Explorer to access the FTP site....use the regular Windows Explorer that shows files on your local computer.  When it is open...go up to the address bar and directly type in the ftp:// address for your domain and press GO button.  It should then prompt you for a username and password.  Enter them and then you should see the ftp contents.  One thing to watch for is if you enter the ftp address and press GO....does it stay within Windows Explorer or does Internet Explorer fire up and open the address.

Another thing to check and or try in addition to the comments above...
- Open IE7, click Tools, Internet Options, Advanced.
- Then check: Enable view of FTP (outside Internet Explorer)
- Then uncheck: Use Passive FTP ( for firewall and DSL compatibility).

Hope this helps you or anyone else reading this post.

I had a similar issue from my home computer connecting to the new IIS7 beta machine here are crystaltech. I tried everything i could think of, and then on a whim instead of entering hostname.com or ip address, i typed out ftp.hostname.com and it worked.
I kicked myself in the keester over that !

cheers,
