Windows 2003 upgrade headaches with FP

I thought I'd throw in my Windows Sharepoint Services experience (which is anecdotal, so may not be representative of all WSS installations...OTOH, maybe it is!).

I've been a user on a WSS site for several months now, and I have to say that performance sucks. What the developers did was essentially copy the information and functionality of an existing ASP intranet site and put it in a Sharepoint Services site, using the portal features and so forth. I'm pretty sure they used similar hardware for the new version of the site.

As an intranet site, its audience is limited, with a max possible number of users under 200, and I'm pretty sure that many times I've been using the site, I've been the only one there. Response is consistently terrible (and I mean consistently...I've never had any page come up fast on this site), much of the functionality sucks (for instance, using the WSS Discussion functionality as a Forum...awful idea, and reflects the designers' lack of experience with Snitz, vB, YaBB, etc., etc.).

I would advise anyone who thinks they might be interested in using WSS to wait and see. Let some other folks work out where the problems lie, write a book, give MS feedback on how to make it useful, etc. Unless you're just doing it for experimentation and playing around, it appears to me that you'll be disappointed with both its performance and functionality.

But hey, that's just one man's opinion!

About my previous comment, I suddenly realized I was making the same mistake I made previously: mixing sharepoint portal technologie with sharepoint services; they're two different things but mutual benefitial.

I dug up one document which explains the difference between these technologies:
http://66.102.11.104/search?q=cache:9J336JFDvCsJ:prade.microsoftemea.com/content/Portals/Relationship%2520Between%2520WSS%2520and%2520SPS%2520v2.0.doc+%22windows+sharepoint+services%22+%22sharepoint+portal%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
or (.doc)
http://prade.microsoftemea.com/content/Portals/Relationship%20Between%20WSS%20and%20SPS%20v2.0.doc

In there it says "This second version of SharePoint Products and Technologies was designed to enhance the integration with Microsoft Office[...]". I remembered from a project 2 years back that a government institution was willing to completey outsource their MS Office desktop functionality to an Application Service Provider to get rid of the desktop maintainance stuff etc. There were not so much ASP's who could handle the workload of 2300 'outsourced' office desktops. I checked if Microsoft had or had the intention to make a 'web-enabled' Office suite. They seemed to be testing/developing this inhouse, but articles mentioned that MS wouldn't undermine their golden egg suite, running on so much desktop. All this said, it is my impression that MS is trying to promote this WSS/SPS product as some sort of 'middleware': web-enabling Office by putting this in the middle, not releasing a real web-enabled Office.

We are a day away from completing Windows 2003 upgrades for 22,000 customers and we want to ensure that the servers and infrastructure are running almost perfectly. When this is done we will start offering new and advanced features like Windows Sharepoint Services and MySQL.

Hey Tim,

It's been a little over a month since the above.  Any word on when we may see Windows SharePoint Services?  Thanks,

Alan

In the next couple days, expect to see a few changes regarding our plans and features... Then, a week later, you will be seeing  some changes that will be occuring over the next 30 to 45 days.

Your answer will be in one of these two releases.
